While the term goldfinch can refer to any of four different species of bird, in North America, it typically refers to the American Goldfinch.  Only the male exhibits the brilliant gold color for which this bird got its name.  Unlike other birds in this family, Goldfinches breed in the late summer months.  Although they will also eat insects, their diet consists primarily of seeds.
