Parakeet refers to a number of slender, long-tailed psittacines. My first bird, purchased for me when I was still in the crib, was the common house-pet also known as the budgerigar or budgie, for short. Other parakeets include the beautiful grass parakeets, the playful Monk parakeet (or Quaker parrot), and the elegant Rosella.
